Based on the estranged romance of a fairy, Zhinu, and a poor cow herder, Niulang, Qixi has mythical origins in China. Zhiniu’s mother, the Goddess of Heaven, opposed her marriage to Niulang and forced her to return to heaven. When Niulang attempted to follow her, the Goddess created a river (the Milky Way) in the sky to separate the two. Every year on Qixi, magpies gather to create a bridge, allowing the two lovers to meet once a year.

I’m the Mood for Love
One of Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai’s greatest films, In the Mood for Love constructs the intersecting lives of neighbors Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-zhen. Both have perpetually missing spouses and each eventually deduces that Chow’s wife and Su’s husband are seeing each other. As they realize their spouses infidelity, Chow and Su’s relationship grows closer. In the Mood for Love is a film whose gorgeous shots and composition are at times more entrancing than the romance itself.
Wes Anderson’s quirky depiction of two lonely young pen pals shows that love isn’t just for the adults. Sam attends Camp Ivanhoe, located on a small island where Suzy happens to live. They decide to runaway together and live in the wilderness using Sam’s knowledge of wilderness survival. A star studded cast and comedic dialogue make this film both entertaining and touching.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Despite their differences, Joel and Clementine begin dating after meeting on a train from Montauk, New York. Their relationship continues with the normal ups and downs until, after a fight, Clementine has all of her memories of Joel erased. Eternal Sunshine delves into science fiction as it explores the pain and happiness of love. It leaves us questioning how we construct our own memories and whether losing the bad parts of a relationship is worth sacrificing the good.
Her takes place in a future where you can buy an operating system that evolves and transforms to your needs. Theodore Twombly, a lonely bachelor who works for a greeting card company, purchases one of these OS’s who names herself Samantha. Theodore soon falls in love with the computer generated Samantha despite the obvious limitations. Through their digital medium, the two laugh and talk together, and perfectly encapsulate what it feels like to fall in love with someone.
