Today would have been Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday. The iconic entertainer died in 1977, but his legend is as large now as ever. In fact, it’s a well-known fact that Elvis’ estate earns more money most years than The King did when he was alive.
Celebrate the King Around the World
More than just an American music legend, Elvis is beloved and his birthday is celebrated every year by millions of people around the world; and those people are planning lots of celebrations for his 80th. Here’s a short list of some of the biggest and coolest events for you get your Elvis groove on – gyrate your hips, give it your best lip curl and remember to thank the crowd… Thank you, thank you very much!
Graceland: Nothing beats celebrating Elvis’ birthday at his house. Graceland, the King’s famous Memphis estate, will host a huge Elvis B-day party. Events include a private tour of Graceland, an Elvis Presley Day proclamation by Memphis County officials and birthday cake. Fans can sign up for Elvis-themed city tours and attend a live concert at the Memphis Cannon Center for the Performing Arts and take part in a very special auction of third party-owned Elvis artifacts.
Hollywood: This year’s bash is being held at the Avalon Hollywood, the former Hollywood Palace stage where Presley delivered some of his earliest national TV appearances in 1956. The event’s guiding philosophy is “all fun, no impersonators.” The talent lineup of more than two dozen performers includes the traditional mix of roots-music musicians, actors, Presley-related celebrities and L.A. music stalwarts.
London: London’s O2 has been playing host to the largest Elvis exhibition ever since December and it runs through August. Featuring over 300 carefully selected items from the massive Graceland Archive, the pieces document the singer’s personal life and meteoric rise to fame; some of them have never been seen outside of the mansion. The list includes his 1956 Lincoln (one of only 3,000 ever made), the American Eagle jumpsuit and cape he wore in the Aloha to Hawaii concert, his ‘taking care of business’ ring, and assorted guitars, photos, belts and wallets. On the 8th, fans will get to see the Elvis Birthday Proclamation Ceremony being streamed live from Graceland.
Australia: Down under, the King’s B-day is being toasted in Parkes, New South Wales at the 2015 Parkes Elvis Festival – “Roustabout” is the theme, giving the to-do a Carnival atmosphere.
Austria: The Austrian city of Judenburg will hold an Elvis’ 80th Birthday Concert on January 15th to honor the King.
