TV SPECIALS

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) – What holiday is complete without a Peanuts special? To honor the true spirit of Thanksgiving, the gang comes up with some wacky new traditions and spoiler…………CB doesn’t kick the ball in this one either.

CB Thanks

Cheers – “Thanksgiving Orphans” (1986) – Lots of shows do Turkey Day special episodes, but this is an all-time classic. In one of the few episodes where the Cheers gang leaves the bar, Sam, Diane and the rest gather at Carla’s for a pot luck Thanksgiving dinner and madcap comedy ensues. Football, sarcastic one-liners and the best food fight ever are on the menu.

South Park – “History Channel Thanksgiving” (2011) – In another masterpiece of parody from Misters Parker and Stone, this time the History Channel is on the skewer and being basted. The story puts Stan and Kyle on a History Channel show about the “true” origin of Thanksgiving, which is strangely similar to the show “Ancient Aliens”.

How I Met Your Mother – “Slapsgiving 2: Revenge of The Slap” (2009) – The best 21st Century Thanksgiving tradition, slapsgiving, is on full display in this follow-up to HIMYM’s 2007 Thanksgiving episode. In this sequel, Marshall re-initiates the slap bet he won against Barney. Barney doesn’t know when or how the next slap will occur, he just knows it will be soon…it’s hilarious.

HIMYM

WKRP in Cincinnati - “Turkeys Away” (1978) – It’s a classic that still makes us chuckle as we think of turkeys raining down on a Cincinnati parking lot as the crack team at WKRP discover that turkeys can’t fly. If you haven’t seen it, check it out on Hulu.

MOVIES

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES (1987) – The best Thanksgiving-themed movie and maybe the best holiday movie ever! Steve Martin and the late, great John Candy tough it out in an epic road trip to get home for Thanksgiving…“Those aren’t pillows”!

Planestrainsauto

THE ICE STORM (1997) – Directed by Ang Lee and starring a heavy hitter cast led by Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline, this is not a story for the kiddies, but it does shine a light on the angst and family issues that are often a part of Thanksgiving.

icestorm

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS (1995) – Directed by Jodie Foster and starring Robert Downey Jr., Holly Hunter and Anne Bancroft, this slice of Generation X family life will have you laughing one minute and crying yours eyes out the next. Just what you want from a holiday flick. Check out a young Claire Danes as Hunter’s daughter.

PAUL BLART: MALL COP (2009) – Come on, it’s funny! Seriously, no matter what critics thought of the Kevin James comedy it was a huge success at the box office. Showing that we all need a good laugh when thinking about Black Friday.

HANNAH AND HER SISTERS (1986) – One of Woody’s best from his prolific New York days, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS also features one of his best all-star casts led by Diane Weist, Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey and Michael Caine. It was Allen’s highest grossing film for decades and won three Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress and it all begins and ends with Thanksgiving dinner.
