Happy Veteran’s Day

In honor of America’s Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines – 10 outstanding movies about our fighting men and women.

1. BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY – It doesn’t get more compelling or emotional than Tom Cruise’s powerhouse performance as real-life Vietnam Vet Ron Kovic. Oliver Stone at his best.

2. PLATOON – The first of Stone’s Vietnam trilogy, this multi-Oscar winning movie is a veritable who’s who of future stars – along with Sheen and Dafoe, Johnny Depp and Forrest Whitaker also show up. PLATOON is one of the best examples of an 80’s movie trend that started to change people’s attitudes about the Vietnam War and the soldiers who fought in it.

3. BLACK HAWK DOWN – Awesome movie, terrible true-life event. Ridley Scott is in excellent form as director and gets outstanding performances from this A-List cast.

4. M*A*S*H – The original dramedy war movie… Hitting screens in 1970, M*A*S*H set the bar for military comedies and spawned one of the longest running shows in TV history. It’s also one of the few movies dealing with the Korean War, which is still technically going on BTW!

5. TEAM AMERICA – It’s not winning any awards for story or acting, but it’s hard to deny the excitement and fun factor for this parody from the “South Park” guys! If you’ve never seen marionettes fight and f*@k as they save the world – now’s the time.

6. SANDS OF IWO JIMA – The Duke at his WW II finest leading US Marines as they fight a bloody battle to take the small Pacific island of Iwo Jima away from the Japanese. Spoiler Alert……….He doesn’t make it up the hill with the flag!

7. THE LONGEST DAY – Oscar-winning epic capturing the D-Day Normandy landings on that ‘longest day’ of June 6th, 1945. Made back when Hollywood used to cram as many stars as possible in a single movie, THE LONGEST DAY boasts a dream cast including John Wayne, Henry Fonda and Robert Mitchum.

8. G.I. JANE –  Demi Moore shaves her head and does chair push-ups…what more do you need to say about this Ridley Scott-directed actioner? Moore’s wannabe SEAL is another in Scott’s list of tough female leads and likely served as a role model for the young female soldiers of today’s military.

9. GLORY – Another multiple Oscar winner that featured a huge, star-driven cast…only this time it’s Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick. Telling the true story of America’s first all black Army regiment formed during the Civil War, GLORY brings the horror and honor of America’s bloodiest and most deadly war up close.

10. THE RIGHT STUFF – Okay, it’s more about astronauts than military, but most of America’s first astronauts were military combat or test pilots. Besides, we dare you to watch this and not feel a swell of patriotism and pride.
